In February 2026, the Tigray Disaster Relief Fund (TDRF), in partnership with the Mulu Charity Organization and Children’s Home (M COCH), provided emergency food assistance to 750 internally displaced persons in the Adi Mehameday and Hitsats camps in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.
Each beneficiary received a food package consisting of 50 kg of maize, 2 liters of cooking oil, 2 kg of salt, and 4 kg of pulses. Valued at approximately $27 per person, the package provides two months of essential food support. The distribution followed TDRF’s initial allocation of $20,000 in December 2025. Elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and lactating mothers were prioritized due to their heightened vulnerability and limited access to alternative sources of care.
“We are truly grateful to those who work tirelessly and give their hard-earned money to support us,” said an elderly beneficiary in Hitsats camp.
Located in northwestern Tigray, Adi Mehameday hosts thousands of elderly internally displaced persons, many of whom are living without family support. Similarly, Hitsats, in north-central Tigray, shelters a large number of displaced individuals who have been separated from their families and lack consistent caregiving support. For most residents of both camps, humanitarian assistance remains their only reliable source of food — more than six years after the onset of the conflict that first displaced them.
With these food supplies now depleted, TDRF is preparing for a second round of distributions. Since its launch in December 2025, TDRF’s IDP emergency fundraiser has raised nearly $6,000 and remains ongoing as we work toward an additional goal of $15,000 to continue this support.
